Should companies that are hiring be allowed to do drug tests that detect drugs from 6 months to a ye

My brother has recently quit smoking marijuana and he's seeking a better paying job he hasnt touched, been around or smoked in over one month, yet he has failed 3 drug tests due to hair tests inwhich they they take 100 strands of your hair and send it to be tested. Apparently the hair testing goes back up to like 6 months and some tests even 7 years or so the lady at the doctors office told him, this is ridiculous for someone trying to get away from that life, just because you fail some test they don't think you are reliable and don't even give you an opportunity to show them what you can do.What are your thoughts on drug testing that far back? I could under stand up to 3 months but 6 months to 7 years? is absurd .its almost like a violation of rights what do you think about drug testing in america? How far do you think they should go back?

100 strands? that's an awful lot of hair. they only need 1. and i've never heard of it detecting 7 yrs back.

I guess its just time to buck up and keep the calendar rolling forward with his drug free life. Then he can reapply.

Theres no violation of his rights, he consented, they told him there would be the test, its all 100% legit. how can you rationalize your statement that its a violation of rights?

They should go back to birth

I think that if it's a reputable company they should be allowed to go back as far as they want to. One month isn't that long for a potsmoker to be clean, so maybe he should be looking for a job that doesn't require drug testing, at least right now until he establishes a good work history.

I don't really think going back as far as you said is right. I can understand going back maybe six months or a year maybe if it is a higher up job position...but seriously, that to me just sounds like nitpicking.

well i guess 3 months wouldn't be that bad

I never heard of hair testing for new jobs. I had 2 new job with in a year and both were just a urine test ( i know, gross...lol).

I agree with you that this is not right or fair but the job market is very tough this days so companies are becoming very very selective. It also depends on the places that you are looking for. Companies have different requirements.

read the link below. most compainies will only use a small length of hair near the scalp , goes back maybe 90 days .

With very long hair you can go back further ( about 1/2" of hair = 30 days ) but the sample can degrade or be contaminated . So a good lab will reject reliable testing past about 30 - 90 days .

If you friend is concerned he can get a short hair cut of like two inches long. That should be about a 90 day period.

A junkie should be identified, they are a potential risk to others in the orkplace . He may be advised to tell the interviewer of his past drug habit , but he is now clean . They can get the testing lab to collect a smaller sample that will test for 30 days .
